PROPERTY developer See Hoy Chan recently bagged the prestigious Fiabci Prix d’Excellence International “Best Retail Category” for the 1 Utama Shopping Complex.
The three-and-a-half year old shopping complex was one of four under Malaysian companies that were awarded by Paris-based Fiabci (International Real Estate Federation).
A total of 43 entries were received for eight award categories, four of which were for the shopping complex category.
Fiabci Asia Pacific secretary general Kumar Tharmaligam said that the award showed that Malaysia is able to build world-class buildings.
He pointed out that a major contributing factor to 1 Utama’s win was its eco-themes and environmentally friendly policies.
See Hoy Chan Holdings’ director Datuk Teo Chiang Kok said that it considered energy conservation even when it built the first phase on 1 Utama in the mid-1990s.
“We have been looking at how to conserve and be energy efficient … today we save about 35 per cent in electricity bills for air-conditioners and 35 per cent in water bills,” he said at a press conference yesterday.
Meanwhile, Teo expects the award to bring in more foreign enquiries on its Bandar Utama township development, office buildings and shopping complexes.
It has already received enquiries to replicate its successful township development in Vietnam and China.
“We are looking at expanding into Vietnam or China, but it is in the exploratory stage,” he said.
“Opportunities abroad are better and Vietnam has good potential,” he added.
